How to Build Self-Confidence

By Chris Sund · Author of You Are Capable of More

Not the loud, fake-it kind. The quiet kind that lets you take the next step even when you are not sure it will work.

The Short Answer

You build self-confidence by acting before you feel confident and letting the evidence pile up. Keep small promises to yourself, take on challenges slightly past what feels comfortable, write down what you do well, and change the way you talk to yourself. Confidence is not something you find first. It is something you collect along the way.

Most of us have confidence backwards. We think we need to feel confident before we try something, so we wait for the feeling, and it never comes, because the feeling is built out of the very attempts we are putting off. Nobody feels confident the first time. They feel confident the tenth time, because nine times they did it while feeling unsure.

Where I Learned This

When I was first promoted to shift supervisor at a restaurant, I had earned it by working hard and doing the extra things nobody asked for. Then I got there and realized I did not actually know how to lead people, some of whom had been there much longer than I had. One of my managers, someone I respected a great deal, handed me John Maxwell’s The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership.

That book did not give me confidence. What it gave me was a way to start, and the confidence came from doing it badly, then a little better, then well enough that people started to follow. I learned I could not do everything myself, and that trust is earned one shift at a time.

85%of working adults in the survey behind my book said they second-guess themselves because of their inner voice. Low confidence is not a rare problem. It is the normal one.

Confidence is not the absence of doubt. It is the habit of acting while the doubt is still there.

Six steps to build confidence that lasts

01

Keep small promises to yourself

Self-confidence is really self-trust, and trust is built the same way with yourself as with anyone else, by doing what you said you would do. Make one small promise today and keep it. Then do it again tomorrow. Over weeks, your mind starts to believe you.

Try thisMake one promise to yourself today that is small enough to keep, and keep it.
02

Act before you feel confident

Stop waiting for the feeling. Take the action and let the feeling follow. Raise your hand in the meeting, send the message, apply for the role. You will feel unsure doing it, and that is fine. Feeling unsure while doing something is exactly what confidence is made from.

03

Stretch a little past comfortable

Confidence grows fastest at the edge of what you can already do. Too easy teaches you nothing, and too hard just confirms your doubts. Pick challenges a step past comfortable, so each success is real and reachable.

04

Collect your evidence

Our memories hold on to every mistake and quietly let go of our wins. Write down what you have done well, the problem you solved, the compliment you brushed off, the hard thing you got through. When doubt shows up, you will have something to argue back with.

05

Change the voice

Notice how you talk to yourself after a mistake. Most of us would never speak to a friend the way we speak to ourselves. Replace the harsh line with what you would say to someone you believed in. How to Stop Negative Self-Talk walks through it.

06

Spend time with people who see more in you

Some of the biggest confidence jumps in my life came from someone else believing in me before I did. Look for those people, mentors, managers, friends who tell you the truth, and ask them what they see. Their belief can carry you until your own catches up.

it the tenth.

Common questions

How can I build my self-confidence fast?

Do one small thing today that you have been avoiding, and notice that you did it. Confidence is built from evidence, and the quickest way to get evidence is to act on something small right away.

What causes low self-confidence?

Often a gap between what you believe you could do and what you have let yourself try. Self-doubt, past criticism and a habit of harsh self-talk all play a part.

Is confidence something you are born with?

No. Confidence is mostly built through experience, small wins and the way you talk to yourself about them. People who seem naturally confident usually just have more evidence stored up. I wrote more on this in Confidence Is Not the Absence of Doubt.

What is the difference between confidence and self-esteem?

Self-esteem is how you value yourself overall. Self-confidence is your trust in your ability to handle something specific. You can build confidence one area at a time, and it tends to lift self-esteem along the way.

Your Takeaway

Stop waiting to feel confident. Keep one small promise to yourself today, do one thing slightly past comfortable this week, and write down that you did it.
